In the vibrant community spotlight of the Mid-Hudson Valley, Joe Richard stands out as a beacon of service and ambition. As a member of the Millbrook Rotary Club, Joe's journey is a testament to how Rotary International can profoundly impact lives, bridging personal growth and community service.
Early Rotary Influence
From a young age, Joe was involved with Rotary, starting with the Rotary Youth Exchange program that took him to Luneburg, Germany. This experience was life-changing for him. "I started off with the intention at some point to do an exchange year," Joe recounts, highlighting the pivotal role that Rotary played in shaping his global outlook and language skills, as he fluently learned German during this program.
Academic and Professional Aspirations
Joe's academic journey reflects a blend of curiosity and dedication. Initially pursuing engineering before transitioning to biology, Joe graduated magna cum laude from Marist College. His research endeavors were not just academic—they were personal explorations into fields like biochemical research and dementia, culminating in his bachelor's degree capstone project.
Currently, Joe is preparing to take his career to new heights by pursuing a Physician Assistant (PA) program at Marist University's newly established program. His aspiration is deeply rooted in a desire to serve. "It's the values that I'm aligned with," Joe shares, referring to both his professional pursuits and his Rotary involvement.
Commitment to Service
Joe's Rotary membership aligns seamlessly with his career in healthcare. "There's a need to be in service to others," he explains, encapsulating his dual commitment to being a healer and a community servant. His work as an EMT has further cemented his resolve to pursue emergency medicine or trauma surgery, fields that resonate with his hands-on approach and interest in directly impacting lives.
Community Involvement and Future Goals
Through his Rotary Club, Joe actively participates in community service, underscoring his belief in the power of collective action to effect positive change. "Rotary is another vessel for that, to help us connect, to help us meet our neighbors," Joe emphasizes, describing the intrinsic link between his personal goals and community values.
