Creating Lasting Impact Through Rotary: A Conversation with Rotary International President Olayinka (Yinka) Hakeem Babalola

Aired July 26th 2026

Rotary International stands as a beacon of service and leadership globally. Through dedicated efforts and a vast network of Rotarians, the organization continuously seeks to create lasting change in communities worldwide. Rotary International President Yinka Babalola shares insights into the impactful initiatives the organization champions and the personal experiences that drive his commitment.

Rotary and Global Challenges

One of Rotary's longstanding commitments is to eradicate polio. A promise was made to the children of the world to eliminate this crippling disease, and Rotary has significantly reduced polio cases from 350,000 children paralyzed annually to just 14 cases so far this year. Babalola insists, “No child deserves to be left behind,” highlighting Rotary’s unyielding dedication to polio eradication in collaboration with the World Health Organization and UNICEF. With only Afghanistan and Pakistan remaining endemic, Rotary's efforts represent “lasting impact,” paving the way for polio to become the second human disease ever eradicated.

Beyond Health: Building Peace and Community

Rotary’s mission extends beyond combating disease. They focus on fostering peace and improving maternal and child health. The organization’s peace centers worldwide train peace fellows, equipping them with the skills needed to build peace and prevent conflict in their communities. Over 250 peace fellows graduate annually, becoming ambassadors of peace across all sectors. Yinka Babalola’s work with the peace center at Makerere University in Uganda exemplifies this commitment, exploring “African solutions to African problems.”

In discussing maternal health, Babalola proudly shares, “Women in [our supported] facilities stopped dying at childbirth.” Through strategic programs, infant mortality has been reduced by 40%, with ongoing initiatives scaling these successes.

The Heart of Rotary: Community and Membership

Rotary’s work thrives through its local clubs. Babalola, a member of the Rotary Club of Trans Amadi in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, underscores the importance of membership growth and community engagement. The Rotary membership in Africa expanded from 29,000 to 48,000 under his leadership. The key, he says, lies in sharing the “Rotary promise,” an invitation to potential members to join an “opportunity to create a lasting impact” and transforming lives, including their own.

Rotary offers more than service; it offers a universe of connections. Babalola attributes much of the organization’s success to building friendships and networks that extend beyond community borders, stating, “You can meet people of like mind, people of diverse cultures across borders.”
