Diveheart: Empowering Individuals through Adaptive Diving
Aired March 8th 2026
Exploring New Possibilities with Diveheart
In a world where accessibility often feels limited, Diveheart stands as a beacon of hope and innovation, offering individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities a chance to experience the freedom and transformative power of scuba diving. Founded by Executive Director Tina Marie Hernandez and Rotarian Jim Elliott, Diveheart uses scuba diving as a unique form of therapy, helping people overcome earthly constraints and embrace a new world underwater.
With its roots in Downers Grove, Illinois, Diveheart has blossomed into a global organization, expanding its reach far beyond its initial Chicago base. Over the years, Diveheart has touched lives around the world, bringing its therapeutic diving programs to countries like Malaysia, China, Australia, and Israel, among others. This remarkable growth underscores the sheer impact and demand for transformative experiences that challenge conventional perceptions of disability.
Transformative Experiences Underwater
The heart of Diveheart's mission is to empower individuals by allowing them to experience the sensation of zero gravity in aquatic environments. Jim Elliott, who has personal experience with disabilities in his family, explains, "Taking someone who's never been in the water and getting them out of their wheelchair, standing up in the deep well... they look down and say, 'Oh my God, I'm standing for the first time since my injury.'"
Diveheart's comprehensive programs cater to a diverse range of individuals, including those with spinal cord injuries, autism, and even blindness. Despite the diversity of disabilities, the driving philosophy remains the same: to help participants feel the freedom, peace, and acceptance that come with being a scuba diver. As Elliott states, "We escape gravity and give people this freedom underwater, but also they're breathing underwater, which is like your whole paradigm shift really for people."
Notable Achievements and Future Endeavors
Apart from individual empowerment, Diveheart is heavily involved in groundbreaking research. Collaborative efforts with the Mayo Clinic and other medical professionals aim to scientifically validate the positive impact of scuba diving on mental and physical health. The organization’s commitment to research solidifies its standing as a leader in adaptive diving therapies.
Additionally, Diveheart has released the documentary "Adapting to Dive," which showcases the organization’s work and its profound impact on participants' lives.
