Empowering Communities and Promoting Wellness
Aired on February 1st 2026

Mental Health America of Dutchess County (MHAD) is dedicated to improving the mental health and well-being of individuals in the community. Established in 1954, this non-profit organization has been offering diverse services to support approximately 5,000 people annually. Executive Director Andrew O’Grady is at the forefront of this mission, leading initiatives that foster community engagement and provide vital resources to those in need.
Andrew O’Grady explains, “People hear mental health and they think that we are the therapist or the psychiatrist. Honestly, we're not. We are a community-based entity that works with people in their homes and out in the community.” MHAD’s approach is rooted in true social work, reflecting the grassroots principles of engaging directly with the community.
Addressing Mental Health Stigmas
O’Grady emphasizes that reducing mental health stigma has allowed more people to discuss their challenges openly. Social media, despite its pros and cons, provides a platform for shared stories, making it easier for individuals to be honest about their mental health struggles. As he points out, “It’s more that the stigma has been reduced. People talk about it.”
MHAD offers a variety of services, including a robust veterans program in Pleasant Valley that focuses on social and recreational activities rather than therapy. Veterans and their families are encouraged to visit this supportive space where they can connect with peers in a healthy environment.
Upcoming Events and Support
One of the key events hosted by MHAD is the Indoor Golf Tournament, set to take place on February 7th at DC Indoor Golf in Poughkeepsie. This event raises funds for the Jumpstart Program, which helps individuals secure housing by providing rent-free apartments for four months. O’Grady encourages community support through sponsorships and participation, with funds aimed at "raising money for our jumpstart program, which is where we rent an apartment and furnish it."
Interested parties can register or sponsor the event by visiting the organization’s website at mhaduchess.org. For those needing immediate assistance, MHAD can be reached at 845-473-2500.
MHAD’s commitment to fostering well-being in Dutchess County is unwavering, offering hope and support to individuals and families alike. By connecting people with the resources they need, the organization strives to make a tangible impact in the community.
