Empowering Communities: The Impact of Hudson River Housing

Aired September 28th 2025

Addressing the Housing Crisis in the Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley region faces a significant challenge in the form of housing insecurity and homelessness. Hudson River Housing, a not-for-profit organization based in Poughkeepsie, has been working tirelessly for 45 years to address these issues. The organization offers a continuum of services, from emergency shelters to permanent housing, aiming to support individuals and families in dire need.

Understanding the Challenges

The housing crisis in the Hudson Valley is exacerbated by a lack of inventory. "The housing stock just hasn't been keeping pace with the population growth," explains Christa Hines, President and CEO of Hudson River Housing. This shortage is even more pronounced in the wake of increased housing demands, spurred by people moving from urban areas during the COVID-19 pandemic. Krista emphasizes the need for more units across all communities, stating, “We’re seeing a shortage in all the communities, and it’s hundreds of units that are needed.”

The Role of Hudson River Housing

Hudson River Housing plays a critical role in alleviating the crisis by offering various programs such as warming centers, transitional housing, and affordable apartments. The organization recently opened a warming center in Red Hook, which provided shelter during winter for six individuals. Hines shares, "We then were able to permanently house them into apartments after the warming period ended."

In addition to emergency services, Hudson River Housing is dedicated to expanding its reach with projects like senior housing and apartments in several counties, including Dutchess, Columbia, and Orange. The organization also supports veterans with specialized housing like Liberty Station, which offers affordable living options for veterans regardless of their income.

Event Highlight: Evening by the Hudson

A significant event to look forward to is the “Evening by the Hudson,” scheduled for November 6th at The Grand View in Poughkeepsie. The event serves as a fundraising opportunity and a platform to raise awareness about the organization’s work. Christa mentions, "It will be a fabulous night with amazing food, an open bar, and a chance to hear powerful stories from those who have benefited from our programs.”

Get Involved and Support

Community support is crucial for the success of Hudson River Housing's mission. Hines remarks, “There's a real surge in the demand for senior housing, and funding is essential to create more units urgently." For those looking to make a difference, Hudson River Housing offers various opportunities, from volunteering at warming centers to helping out with food pantries.

Hudson River Housing stands as a beacon of hope in the Hudson Valley, constantly working to ensure that everyone has access to safe and affordable housing. As Christa Hines puts it, "We really do the whole gamut from essentially homelessness all the way to home ownership." Their comprehensive approach is a testament to their commitment to the community and to the belief that housing is a fundamental right.
