Rotary's Fight Against Modern Slavery: Shining a Light on a Hidden Crisis
Aired August 3rd 2025

Understanding Modern Slavery
Slavery is not just a relic of the past. It persists today in a form often termed "modern slavery." Many associate slavery with images from history, but modern slavery focuses more on psychological manipulation and coercion. As Josh Loza, a dedicated advocate working with Three Strands Global Foundation, explains, "It's the same concept of someone being forced to do something against their will, often with no other option."
Modern slavery encompasses various forms of exploitation, including forced labor and sex trafficking. For instance, individuals may be manipulated into sex trafficking by someone they know and trust, like a family member or a romantic partner. "Kidnapping is an aspect of it, but trafficking is happening more commonly by someone the individual knows and trusts," says Loza.
Combating the Crisis
The Rotary Action Group Against Slavery (RAGAS) is a pivotal force in combating human trafficking. RAGAS works on projects within local communities to address and reduce human trafficking. Loza's organization, Three Strands Global Foundation, partners with Rotary clubs to bring education to schools. He notes, "We trained school staff how to recognize signs of trafficking in their students."
This education begins early, with programs for students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Elementary education focuses on safety and identifying trusted adults, while older students learn more directly about the risks and signs associated with trafficking.
The Broader Impact
Beyond education, various industries, including the telecom and trucking industries, are also joining the fight against trafficking. Programs like Telecommunications Against Trafficking and Exploitation (TATE) aim to train individuals in these sectors to recognize and report signs of trafficking. The approach is similar to the successful model used by Truckers Against Trafficking, which leverages the eyes and ears of truckers on the road.
As Loza highlights, the fight against modern slavery is gaining traction. "The collective understanding has increased. We're starting to turn the tide," he says, noting the importance of continuous education and awareness.
Taking Action
If you suspect someone is a victim of trafficking, it's crucial to take appropriate steps without endangering anyone involved. In the United States, the National Human Trafficking Hotline is available at 1-888-373-7888, and you can text "HELP" or "INFO" to 233733. Josh Loza's commitment reminds us of the ongoing battle against human trafficking and the vital role of education and community action in eradicating modern slavery. His work with the Rotary Action Group Against Slavery highlights the power of collaboration in tackling this global issue.
