Soaring for a Cause: The Rotary's Remarkable Flight to End Polio
Aired February 22nd 2026

The Rotary Club's initiative, the "Flight to End Polio," has spotlighted the relentless efforts to eradicate polio worldwide, showcasing the determination and incredible journey of two notable Rotarians, Peter Teahan and Ed Galkin. Their mission has proven that passion, combined with skill and commitment, can lead to groundbreaking achievements in humanitarian efforts.
An Ambitious Journey
The concept of the flight began as a dream for Peter Teahan, whose journey to raise awareness and funds to end polio took flight in 2023. His first monumental journey covered 30,000 miles in a mere 90 days, alongside his cousin, John Ockenfels, who served as both companion and technical director. This ambitious expedition extended through 37 landings across 19 countries worldwide.
A notable event during the journey involved a stop in Karachi, Pakistan, where they directly participated in vaccinating children. Despite being hospitalized multiple times due to exposure while in difficult locales, Teahan continued with unwavering resolve. As Peter described, "It's much bigger than us."
Continuing the Mission
Ed Galkin, who holds the remarkable distinction of being the oldest pilot to cross the Atlantic at 89, echoes the spirit of determination seen in the Rotary's mission. He joined Teahan on a subsequent journey to circle the Atlantic, further amplifying their message and efforts. Galkin's extensive flying experience includes over 7,000 flight hours, emblematic of the dedication brought to Rotary's cause.
During their Atlantic expedition, the duo encountered technical challenges, including navigating through severe weather and hardware malfunctions. Nevertheless, their perseverance led them to successful landings across several countries, engaging with local Rotary Clubs to spread their message.
Impact and Future Goals
The "Flight to End Polio" has raised significantly over $2 million, with 100% directed towards Rotary's polio eradication efforts, thanks to personal funding by Teahan and Galkin for all travel expenses. The Gates Foundation's matching donations could potentially triple this amount.
Their mission underscores Rotary's global network and the grassroots power in achieving monumental goals. As Galkin shared, "Without Rotarians supporting us, this trip wouldn't be possible." With continued support, these flights are expected to contribute over $9 million to the cause.
