The Transformative Experience of Rotary Youth Exchange Programs
Aired June 15th 2025

The Rotary Youth Exchange programs are opening doors for students across the globe, cultivating cultural understanding and global friendships. Recently, at the Hudson Valley Rotary District 7210 conference, Maria Rice and Nan Greenwood shared insights into how these opportunities are impacting students' lives.
Youth Exchange: A Global Opportunity
Maria Rice, a pivotal member of the Rotary Youth Exchange Committee, describes the program as an incredible opportunity for students in District 7210 to immerse themselves in foreign cultures. "Youth Exchange is when we give opportunities to students in our district to go to foreign countries for either a full year or a short-term during summer," Maria explains. In return, inbound students are welcomed to experience life in the United States. These exchanges are not limited to children of Rotarians and are accessible to homeschooled students within a Rotary-sponsored school district.
Maria highlights, "Each student is like their own ambassador for their country and they get to know more about the United States. So we're passing goodwill about the United States one student at a time."
Training and Support
Before embarking on these exchanges, students receive language training and orientation. Nan Greenwood, an experienced leader in the inbound exchange student program, ensures that students are well-prepared. "We do have orientation and training sessions, and we do strongly encourage students to study the language of the country they’re going to," Nan notes. Host families play a crucial role, as they must reside within the same school district to facilitate the student’s schooling and community engagement.
Personal Experiences: A World of Difference
During the conference, two extraordinary exchange students, Alec from Brazil and Ananya from India, shared their experiences in the United States. Alec emphasizes the enriching educational differences he experienced, saying, "It's really different in Brazil and can be really fun. All the classes that I have, photography, art classes, things I don't have in Brazil in my hometown are pretty fun."
Ananya credits her decision to participate in this program to her sister's positive experience, despite only attending virtually due to circumstances. Reflecting on her own journey, she notes, "The best experiences were my musical, 'Bye Bye Birdie.' The second most beautiful experience was Niagara Falls. It is the heaven for me."
Fostering Lifelong Relationships and Global Peace
Maria and Nan both agree on the profound impact these exchanges have on fostering peace and understanding worldwide. Nan beautifully articulates, "When you look at today's headlines, you realize how important it is to promote peace in the world and where better to start than with young people."
For those interested in learning more about the Rotary Youth Exchange or wishing to host an exchange student, Maria suggests visiting the District 7210 website or rotary.org to find valuable information.
Conclusion
The Rotary Youth Exchange programs offer remarkable opportunities for students to grow personally and culturally, creating ambassadors of goodwill and fostering a broader understanding of global cultures. With experiences that inspire and educate, these programs pave the way for lasting world peace, one student at a time.
