Understanding Narcan: Prevention

(Aired March 24, 2024)

Lori Levine, working with the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral and Community Health, plays a crucial role in addressing the opioid crisis through the Opioid Overdose Prevention Program. This program is pivotal in training residents of Dutchess County to respond effectively to opioid overdoses, providing them with the necessary skills and a free naloxone kit if they're over eighteen. Naloxone, often known by its brand name Narcan, is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose.

The opioid epidemic is a significant issue in Dutchess County, mirroring the national crisis. Lori explains, "Opioids are a big problem in Dutchess County, as well as other counties in New York state and as well as nationwide. Sadly, it's of epidemic proportions." The county has been proactive in its approach to combat this issue, utilizing naloxone as a key tool in their strategy.

The training provided through Lori's program is designed to be accessible and practical, ensuring that participants are ready to act in an emergency without requiring medical expertise. "If a person knows how to make it and has the equipment, it's easy and cheap to make. You know, who would want to grow a field of poppies? That's really difficult when you can just whip something up in a lab," Lori mentions, highlighting the challenges and dangers of synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

Through Lori Levine’s efforts and the support of the Dutchess County Department of Behavioral and Community Health, the community is better equipped to face the challenges posed by the opioid epidemic, offering crucial training and resources to save lives.
