Celebrating Community Heroes: The Impact of Red Hook's Rotary Club

Aired November 2nd 2025

In the heart of the Hudson Valley, the Red Hook Rotary Club has been a beacon of service, influencing positive change within the community. This year, the club honors Lisa Murray and Maria Scibelli as Citizens of the Year for their commendable contributions to youth safety and community service, highlighted by their pivotal roles in organizing the annual After Prom Party.

Lisa Murray has been at the forefront of the After Prom Party for 34 years. Her dedication stemmed from personal experiences, as she expressed, “I knew what I did when I was younger and went to my prom, and I didn't want my children to do the same thing.” Alongside Maria Scibelli, who has been a stalwart supporter since her son was in ninth grade, they have helped orchestrate an event focused on providing a safe, entertaining environment for local high school students post-prom. This initiative is a testament to their commitment to prevent youth drinking and driving, ensuring safety during the risky prom night hours.

The After Prom Party, held at the Bard Stevenson Gym, offers a plethora of engaging activities from a bounce house to a photo booth, complemented by generous prizes and delightful games. “We would like every senior that comes to the post prom party to walk out with at least one $100 bill,” shared Maria, highlighting the club's incredible community support through local business donations.

The Citizen of the Year Dinner honoring Lisa Murray and Maria Scibelli is scheduled for Saturday, November 15th, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM at the Red Hook Community Center. Tickets are priced at $75 per person and can be purchased online at RedHookRotaryClub.org or at the Red Hook Town and Village Halls. “Our traditionally sell-out event is a celebration of community spirit and service,” notes Carl Doden, chairman of the Citizen of the Year event.

Beyond their work with the After Prom Party, Lisa and Maria have actively contributed to other community service initiatives. Lisa is involved with suicide prevention efforts and runs a food pantry, while Maria lends her skills to suicide prevention too and past PTSA activities. Their ongoing dedication epitomizes the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self."

The Red Hook Rotary's influence extends to various impactful projects like the Clink Program, which supports hygiene products for those in need, and annual coat drives ensuring warmth during the cold months.

For those inspired to engage with the community's development and to witness the profound effects of active service members like Lisa and Maria, the Red Hook Rotary Club invites participation and support. Visit RedHookRotaryClub.org to learn more and contribute to these meaningful initiatives.
