Empowering Conversations for Conflict Resolution

Aired January 21, 2024

At the Mediation Center of Dutchess County, individuals from all walks of life come together to resolve conflicts in a setting that emphasizes understanding and cooperation. Leanne Lawson, the Executive Director of the center, and Claudia Abbott-Barrish, the Director of Restorative Justice Programs, play pivotal roles in fostering this environment. The center, celebrating its 40th anniversary, handles various cases, from small claims to family disputes and even workplace disagreements, with over 90% involving volunteers.

Leanne Lawson says, "The goal of community mediation is really having that time and space to feel supported in different dialogues so that you can feel heard, gain clarity, and figure out ways that you want to move forward." This sentiment is echoed in their practice, where volunteers are not acting as lawyers but as facilitators to guide constructive conversation.

Claudia Abbott-Barrish highlights the transformative nature of mediation at the center, stating, "At the foundation of all conflict is usually the feeling that we need to be heard and seen." The center's approach helps reframe disputes into dialogues, making it a valuable alternative to traditional legal actions, especially for those hesitant to engage in potentially contentious legal battles.

The center's mantra, "Turning conflict into conversation," encapsulates its mission to not only resolve disputes but to transform how individuals interact with each other, promoting a community-oriented approach to conflict resolution. Through this work, the Mediation Center not only helps resolve immediate issues but also rebuilds relationships and strengthens community bonds, one conversation at a time.
