Enhancing Lives Through Rotary's Commitment to Better Hearing

Aired November 16th 2025

In recent times, discussions about improved hearing technologies and accessibility have gained momentum, thanks in part to passionate advocates like Ellen Haggerty, a devoted Rotarian from the Pleasant Valley Rotary Club. Her work shines a light on the global campaign toward better hearing awareness and accessible solutions, especially for children and those in low-resource areas.

Ellen Haggerty's Inspiring Journey

Ellen's personal journey with hearing loss began at the tender age of four. Recalling those early challenges, Ellen shares her motivation: "My passion is to help other four-year-olds just like me be able to get hearing technology, especially in low-resource areas." Her story underscores the global need for accessible hearing solutions.

As a dedicated member of the Hearing Rotary Action Group, Ellen has played a crucial role in spreading awareness and initiating decisive actions worldwide, including countries like Nicaragua, Cambodia, and Guatemala. The organization, which is committed to better hearing, was initially exclusive to Rotarians but now welcomes anyone passionate about hearing health.

Transformative Technologies and Initiatives

Technology has dramatically transformed the hearing aid industry from bulky analog devices to sleek, digital, and Bluetooth-enabled aids. As Ellen describes, "The biggest advancement has come with the going from analog hearing aids to digital hearing aids, and then really lately into Bluetooth. Bluetooth is amazing; it's connected to your phone." These advancements offer users more comfort and enhanced auditory experiences, making communication significantly easier.

The group also emphasizes preventive measures, like using ear protection at loud events and encouraging youth to limit headphone volumes to protect their hearing. Ellen further illustrates the importance of early intervention with her initiatives that support infant hearing screenings in countries with limited resources. "In the United States, 95% of all babies are screened," Ellen notes. Her efforts ensure similar practices are adopted globally, giving children the chance to learn and develop language skills early.

Global Grants and Community Impact

Ellen is a master of acquiring funds through Rotary's Global Grants. Over the past 12 years, she has successfully secured around $500,000 to fund various hearing projects worldwide. These grants have enabled her to not only supply hearing aids but also educate and equip communities, ensuring sustainable hearing healthcare practices.
