Future-Proof Your Finances: Expert Financial Planning

Aired February 25th, 2024

In the dynamic world of financial planning, understanding the basics and knowing when to engage a professional can significantly impact your financial future. Rotarian Tom Geoghegan, a dedicated financial planner, shares his insights on the evolution and importance of financial advice in today's economy.

Tom explains the historical context of financial advising, tracing it back to the 1920s with the creation of mutual funds. These funds democratized investing, originally a privilege of the wealthy, by pooling stocks and bonds to offer average investors diversified, manageable portfolios. This development marked a pivotal shift, making financial growth accessible to a broader audience. "They created the mutual fund and that really jumpstarted the financial industry and my profession," Tom notes, highlighting the significance of this innovation.

For those new to investing, Tom describes a mutual fund as "just a pool of stocks and bonds," which allows investors to buy fractional shares. This diversification is crucial, ensuring that the failure of a single stock doesn’t spell disaster for the investor’s entire portfolio. It is a foundational concept in risk management, making it a preferred choice for new investors.

Tom’s journey into financial planning began in college, where he discovered his knack for economics and finance. His career choice was driven by his desire to interact directly with clients and make a tangible difference in their lives, rather than being confined to back-office number crunching. "I could talk with people all day and kind of help people. I’m good with that," he shares, revealing his passion for client-facing roles.

Addressing the best time to start planning financially, Tom advises, "the sooner the better." Starting young, even in one's teens, can set a foundation for a robust financial future. He suggests initiating savings with the first paycheck from a full-time job, emphasizing the importance of early and proactive financial management.

For parents struggling to introduce financial concepts to their children, Tom recommends involving them in meetings with financial advisors or during tax preparations to familiarize them with essential financial responsibilities. "Getting them involved in the process early on could go a long way in shaping their development," he suggests, underscoring the educational value of practical experience over traditional schooling in financial matters.

In choosing a financial planner, Tom advises starting with referrals from trusted individuals and ensuring the planner is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP), as all CFPs are fiduciaries who are obligated to prioritize their client’s best interests.

Tom Geoghegan’s insights not only shed light on the practical aspects of financial planning but also reflect the core values of Rotary—service above self—which he integrates into his professional life. His approach to financial planning is not just about growing wealth but also about empowering individuals and communities to secure their financial futures effectively.
