Reviving Community and Connection: Vassar Warner Home for the Day Project

The Vassar Warner Home, with its rich 154-year history, is embarking on a new chapter with the launch of its "Home for the Day" project. Spearheaded by Erica Van Salu and Rich Schuster, this project seeks to reconnect the senior community with the vibrant life Vassar Warner is known for, following the unexpected closure of its residential services last year.

Despite the challenges, Erica Van Salu expresses optimism about the journey forward. She reflects, "We're not just about surviving; we're about thriving and making sure that Vassar Warner remains a cornerstone of the Dutchess County community." This commitment echoes the unique history of the home, which began as an institution set up by the Vassar Brothers—well-known for their roles in establishing Vassar College and Vassar Hospital.

The "Home for the Day" initiative is a strategic first step towards the long-term goal of reopening the facility’s residential care services. Currently, it is designed as a social model, where seniors 65 and older can participate in daily activities, share meals, and enjoy the fellowship of peers. "There's no reason why it should have stopped now," Rich Schuster asserts, emphasizing the resilience of the home through historical challenges like world wars and pandemics. The program caters particularly to those who benefit from supervision and social interaction, such as those in the early stages of dementia or who cannot be left alone during the day.

The grand opening of this adult daycare service is slated for June 2nd, with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for July 11th at 4:00 PM at the Vassar Warner Home, located at 52 South Hamilton Street in Poughkeepsie. Both events open exciting opportunities for families to explore the services and see the distinct environment of the home, which Rich fondly describes as "like grandma's house."
