World Polio Day: Be Part of a Polio-Free Future

Aired October 13th 2024

In a concerted effort to eradicate polio, Rotarian Carol Choa shares insights into the ongoing battle against this debilitating disease. Poliomyelitis, commonly known as polio, primarily affects children under five and is spread through contaminated water. Despite the availability of vaccines which have nearly eradicated polio in most parts of the world, outbreaks persist in regions with limited access to vaccinations and in countries experiencing conflict.

Carol, a dedicated Rotarian and past district governor, elaborates on Rotary’s pivotal role in this global health challenge. She highlights that "the last mile is the most difficult," acknowledging ongoing efforts in Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the wild polio virus still poses a threat. Carol's commitment is evident as she discusses Rotary’s approach, which includes organizing National Immunization Days and deploying volunteers to administer oral vaccines—simple yet effective drops that can prevent the virus.

The global effort to end polio also faces challenges such as accessibility and regional conflict, which occasionally hampers vaccination campaigns. Carol mentions a poignant instance where a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip was briefly considered to allow health workers to administer vaccines, showcasing the complex interplay between health initiatives and political situations.

World Polio Day, marked on October 24th annually, symbolizes the global solidarity and resolve in the fight against polio. Carol encourages support for the Rotary Foundation’s Polio Plus Fund, which benefits from substantial matching grants from partners like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, emphasizing that every contribution is crucial to achieving a polio-free world.

This narrative underlines the resilience and commitment of volunteers who navigate various obstacles to ensure every child receives the polio vaccine, moving closer to eradicating a disease that once terrorized populations across the globe.
