Transforming Lives: Rotary's Impact on Communities Worldwide (Part 4)

Aired August 17th 2025

Rotary International continues to exemplify its commitment to service and community improvement on a global scale. The recent Rotary International Convention in Calgary, Canada, provided an incredible opportunity for Rotarians to discuss various initiatives aimed at making the world a better place, ranging from enhancing hearing abilities to tackling mental health and addiction issues.

Rotary's Hearing Efforts with Ellen Haggerty

One of the esteemed guests, Ellen Haggerty from Pleasant Valley Rotary Club, shared insights into her commendable work in improving hearing capacities worldwide. Ellen and her team focus on helping people in low-resource countries prevent hearing loss due to infections and poor sanitation. She stated, "50% of all hearing loss is preventable," emphasizing the need for early diagnosis and hearing aids. Her efforts span across Cambodia, the Philippines, Ghana, and more, demonstrating Rotary's dedication to impactful global initiatives. For those interested in supporting or learning more about hearing improvement efforts, the Hearing Rotary Action Group's website offers resources and a platform for involvement.

Mental Health Advocacy with Bob Anthony

Bob Anthony, a Rotarian from Naples, Florida, highlighted the importance of addressing mental health stigma through Rotary's Mental Health Initiative. He alarms listeners that "stigma is real," especially in places like Nigeria where mental health issues might be viewed as familial punishments. The initiative provides practical toolkits to break stigma, raise awareness, and enhance mental health resources. With over 500 members from more than 50 countries, Rotary's reach in mental health is expansive. Inquiries and support for this cause can be found at ragonmentalhealth.org.

Addiction Prevention with Larry Kenmore

Larry Kenmore from Arkansas brought to light the Rotary Action Group for Addiction Prevention. Their objective is to prevent and treat addiction, tackling issues related to prescription drug dependencies. Kenmore noted that "70% of the people that have a drug addiction today started on a prescription drug," urging for more meticulous post-prescription monitoring by medical professionals. The group encourages local rotary clubs to implement projects that tackle addiction within communities, available for contact via Facebook, LinkedIn, or email at Larry at Rag app North America us.

Hope for Ukraine with Vera Sirina

From a different perspective of service, Vera Sirina discussed Rotary's initiatives in war-torn Ukraine, focusing on rehabilitation for children and families affected by the conflict. Rotary's projects include organizing camps abroad for mental health support and ensuring educational continuity despite the war's disruptions. The efforts prioritize both children's and mothers' mental well-being, aiming to provide holistic recovery solutions. Continual support for Ukrainian projects can be gleaned through Rotary’s social media pages and in-person collaborations at international conventions.

Joining Hands Across Borders

Rotary's global impact is further exemplified through its fellowship programs such as the Beer Fellowship, which Moses Mowers from Ghana described as inclusive for both Rotarians and non-Rotarians who appreciate beer. This community invites members worldwide to connect over shared interests and foster fellowship.

The gathering in Calgary showcased Rotary’s unwavering dedication to humanitarian efforts, uniting members from all corners of the globe to advance their mission of service above self.
